Orpheus was the legendary poet, singer and harp player in ancient Greek mythology who was able to charm all the world - living and death - with his music.  He loved his beautiful Eurydice who died from a fatal bite in her heel by a snake.

Orpheus travelled to the Underworld, and his singing and playing softened the heart of Hades who agreed to let Eurydice return to the earth. But on one condition only: he should walk all the way in front of her and never look back until they had reached the upper world.

Of course he was unable to resist the temptation, and the very moment he turned to look at her, she vanished forever.
